All About Delivery Times
It's Complicated
The Apps Over Promise
And The Drivers Take The Blame

Drivers are not informed of the time you placed your order. So delivery times drivers are given, usually don't match the original time the app quoted you. That's why I put that little slip on your order. giving you the time info I was given by the app platform

When you're cruising the apps restaurant selection page. And it says delivery in 15 minutes for a restaurant. This is absolutely ridiculous, it's Utopian thinking. And it usually doesn't happen, here's why.

This time is if a driver is parked at that restaurant. The restaurant has the order ready exactly on time. Said driver parked at the restaurant accepts the delivery (we don't have to) the pay might be too low. Then it offers it to the next closest available driver, available is a loose term here.

Because this 15 minutes is amazingly misleading folks. Because after a driver accepts that delivery, you know what's going to happen. The app is going to offer the driver a second, or maybe even a third delivery. This saves the app money because they can lower mileage pays. And if it's super busy it helps get orders delivered.

But that original 15 minute time quote is completely destroyed. That's why if you watch your order screen, the time will fluctuate so much.

But you take your fury out on the driver LOL, and it's not always their fault

Sometimes they send us an order already bundled as a double. So your 15 minutes, ya forget it. The ones sent as a bundle sometimes are structured reasonably, but sometimes it's a mess. One of the orders will be from a notoriously slow restaurant.

Also your order may have floated in the wind for 15 minutes before a driver accepted it. But that 15 minute time gap IS NOT the fault of your driver.

The restaurant may end up being 20 minutes late making the order. But many customers don't respond to our texts. Or answer the phone when we call, so we never get a chance to explain what happened. You might just think “crappy driver”

A nightmare situation is if the original driver unassigned themselves for some reason. Maybe the restaurant lied and said “5 minutes” now it's been like 20. That driver bails on the order, the app sends out the offer again. Another driver accepts it. And has NO IDEA you have already been waiting 25 minutes. The app adjusts the times it gives the driver, so we think it's a fresh order. They have no idea how angry the customer already is. And the restaurant will never tell us another driver bailed on the order. Because then we might bail on it like forget that.

This One's An Evil Nightmare
Those times it took an hour to get the food, this might of happened. The original driver may have had an emergency while in route to you. Maybe a car break down or whatever. So they call up support and unnasign the order. The app has to resend the order to the merchant to remake the order, and find a driver to accept and pick it up. And I know with almost certainty, sometimes the original tip doesn't get forwarded to the new order. So now drivers just see a delivery only paying 3 or 4 bucks, and are like “nope, decline”
