The base pay these apps offer drivers is crap, like 3 bucks a delivery. Drivers make many decisions based on tips, it's that simple
Drivers will see the delivery instructions that were designed around, and intended for tipping customers to use. In the effort to improve service of delivery drivers. And the driver will quickly unassign your order. We know the tip upfront, and no driver wants to hear a bunch of demands from a customer that didn't tip them. Because for us it's not actually like a true tip, it's like half of our pay. We're not like waiters folks, we have expenses to cover. Fuel, vehicle maintenance (yes it's our personal vehicles we tear up doing this gig) insurance, taxes.... and so on. We are actually classified as our own business. So we don't be getting tax refunds like ya'll do lol. We get a tax bill from Uncle Sam, he don't play, and the bill ain't low.
Remember, I personally appreciate all customers, and give you the same great service regardless of tip. But that's only after I decided to accept your delivery in the first place. Drivers know the pay when we accept it, therefore we should give the same great service. I even turn myself off so the app can't offer me other delivery's while I'm handling yours. So ya if you ever got the OBDriver dropping off your order, understand I willingly took a serious pay cut just to ensure you got the best delivery time possible..
delivery drivers are not obligated to accept a delivery offer. We know your tip upfront and can decide to decline the order. Anyone who tells you we don't know the general amount of your tip upfront. Is either grossly misinformed, or just lying to you. We absolutely know, we're contractors. The apps have to include that information when they offer us the delivery. And some apps specifically list the exact amount of your tip.
Other apps we have to deduct the standard mileage pay from the total pay offer we see, and what's left is the amount of your tip. It's rough math, But pretty easy to do after a couple weeks on the job. And you can quickly filter out the tip amount when your looking at the order details pre acceptance.
So if a driver accepts your order with no tip attached, they are already kind of not happy about it. But sometimes it's slow and you have to just accept whatever pops up. Because it may be 20 minutes before you see another offer. Now if it's lunch, or dinner rush when there are plenty of available delivery's. I'm going to be honest with you, no tip orders get declined by drivers like the Bubonic Plague. And the app scrambles to get drivers to accept them by either doubling you up with a tipping order. Or offering you as an add on delivery, which we can still decline.
But there's a new tool that let's us separate out and basically unassign non tipping orders. This tools original purpose was to deal with restaurants when they run late making orders. But trust drivers will use it in other ways.
Drivers know the fees on these apps already suck, but simply throwing your driver a few bucks. Can help prevent a bunch of issues you had no clue were happening simply based on that lack of a tip.
Ya we also know a lot of drivers suck, that's why we're trying to fix service. But once it's fixed keeping professional minded drivers on the road. The type that care about your order, and do it right. Well it's going to require tips, there's no getting around it. When the tips dip, out go the good drivers. And all you're left with is the riff raff.
